The Quince fruit: a gift of nature!

The Quince fruit: a gift of nature!

To entrust with serenity our health to our daily cosmetics and detergents, it would be useful to know better the ingredients they are made of.

As always, we select ingredients of vegetable origin for our products, after studying their beneficial characteristics for our body.

In order to spread this valuable knowledge, from here on we will undertake a “journey” through the inherent qualities of the natural ingredients contained in our products.

Let's start with an almost forgotten fruit, the Quince, whose extracts are among the functional ingredients typical of Biricco baby care line and our Sunscreen fluids.

Quince is a fruit of a small deciduous tree –called Quince itself– belonging to the family of Rosaceae and native of the Mediterranean and Caucasian areas: its scientific name is Cydonia oblonga Mill. or Cydonia vulgaris or Pyrus cydonia, (as usually appears in our ingredients). The shape of the Quince resembles an longer apple (or a squat pear) and its colour is gold-yellow.

Known since antiquity as a delicious and healthy fruit, it was cultivated 4,000 years ago by the Babylonians, it was considered sacred to Aphrodite by the Greeks and then described by the Romans in many classical texts including those of Pliny, Cato and Virgil.

There are many health certificated benefits of the fruit but the best known are the qualities as food. However, a few people know that some extracts are particularly suitable for application on the skin.

The most interesting extracts come from the peel and the pulp of this fruit but also from seeds and leaves. To specify, all these parts have revealed a high content of phenolic compounds with numerous cosmetic features that can be summarized as follows:

  • Antioxidant property, it neutralizes and eliminates free radicals. Free radicals are dangerous by-products of cellular metabolism that cause the mutation or death of the cells.
  • Antiallergic effect, with reduction of dermatitis and similar reactions.
  • Antimicrobial effect, derived mainly from the peel of the fruit.
  • Anti-inflammatory and soothing properties.

To sum up, thanks to a special extract of the Quince seeds, the look of skin greatly improves, remaining protected, soft and moisturised. While the astringent, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory features derive from the fruit .

A blessing, no doubt about it, can you ask nature for more?

And it is not all. From the production of Quince until the use of extracts for skin healthy, there is a direct path that Officina naturae follows with a particular care: we buy directly quinces from a small Italian manufacturer, which uses organic farming methods, thus trying to support the economy of small farmers and shortening the production chain as much as possible; we transform ourselves these precious fruits, then, without the intervention of third parties, in the laboratory we obtain the extracts that enrich the formulas of Biricco and Officina naturae Sunscreen lines.
