Feeling like in paradise, without going so far... it's Sicily!
Do you agree if we tell that natural havens are not only in the far corners of the world? Just look round the corner and come to Italy!
Our peninsula, with its islands, is a real treasure trove, with places that sometimes are undiscovered, sometimes abandoned, sometimes very crowded and for that eroded because of intrusive turism.
Anyway, there are oasis that have been saved by humans and for that we are very proud of Italy! We have visited one of this oasis, that is “Zingaro Reserve”, located in the northwestern part of Sicily, in the province of Trapani.
It is a costal area that extends for 7 kilometers on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
It is characterized by limestone bluffs with natural dolomitic rocks that form cliffs interrupted by white inlets slipping in a turquoise sea.
In addition to the colourful and clear sea, the flora arouses astonishment enriched by an unique biodiversity, because of the particular moist microclimate, even when it does not rain for long time.
Our special tip is to visit this place during the spring, when the wild orchids bloom, they are one of the most beautiful attraction of this reserve. Some of them born only on this promontory and it is not possible to find them somewhere else. The dimensions of some of them are very little, like few centimeters of height and finding them is very difficult… But we did it and we really felt like in a “garden in bloom”.
There are a lot of paths to traverse and landscape and nature beauties to find out: in fact, this reserve is the only one without a coast road in the protected area of Sicily coast. Walking across is the ideal, with a backpack, a camera, a manual to learn the flora and… our precious sunscreens, essentials under the Sicilian sun!
Another little consideration is not to leave waste, in order to respect the reserve, especially the combustible ones, because unfortunately fires are a constant plague in this area, sometimes because of natural events but more often because of humans.
These were few but very important tips to live the nature around us in the sustainable way.
In regards to sustainability, we have to remind that the “Zingaro Reserve” is still intact because of thousand of Sicilian environmentalists. In May 1980, environmentalists and some local residents opposed to the concreting and the consequent destruction of this amazing part of coast with an action called “La marcia dello Zingaro”, thanks to this people now the reserve is intact for everyone who wants to get in touch with the unspoilt and wild nature.
This is a proof that even small actions – such as using eco-friendly cosmetics and detergents – can help so much to preserve natural resources and our Earth.
